Arthur Bugbee's father was John Stephenson Bugbee (born 05/31/1840 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada-d. 05/16/1896 in Juneau, AK), a San Francisco attorney. He attended the Boston Mercantile Academy in the mid-1850s, and graduated from the Harvard Law School.

His mother was Anna Maxwell Greene (born in RI-d. ).

Arthur's grandfather was Samuel C. Bugbee, the pioneer San Francisco architect.

He had a brother Maxwell Greene Bugbee (born 09/02/1865 in San Francisco, CA-d. 12/27/1927 in San Francisco, CA), who also worked as an architect in San Francisco.
