Résumé
Principal, Maxwell G. Bugbee, Architect, San Francisco, CA, c. 1892-1927.
Relocation
Maxwell Greene Bugbee came from a family of professional people, his grandfather being Samuel C. Bugbee (1811-1877), an early San Francisco architect who had come to the city from Canada via MA. His father was a successful San Francisco lawyer and jurist. His mother's well-to-do Greene family also had come from New England, having settled in New England before the Revolutionary War.
The 1900 US Census recorded that Maxwell G. Bugbee, his wife Evangeline, two children--Clifford and Geraldine-- and a servant, Kittie F. Braden (born c. 02/1882 in CA), shared a house at 424 Santa Clara Avenue in Alameda, CA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: Alameda Precinct 13, Alameda, California; Roll: 81; Page: 5; Enumeration District: 0321, accessed 09/30/2024.)
By 1910 the census reported that the family lived at 854 Cole Street in San Francisco, without a servant. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: San Francisco Assembly District 39, San Francisco, California; Roll: T624_100; Page: 3b; Enumeration District: 0231; FHL microfilm: 1374113, accessed 09/30/2024.) They continued to inhabit this address in 1915. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1915, p. 374.)
Parents
His father was John Stephenson Bugbee (d. 1896 in AK), a lawyer trained at the Harvard Law School. He would become a successful lawyer and judge presiding in the Territory of Alaska.
Anna Maxwell Greene, his mother, resided in Bridgeport, CT, in 1850 with her family. Her parents, Nathanael Greene (born 06/07/1818 in RI) and Hannah Wells Eldredge (born 08/13/1822 in Boston, MA-d. 05/13/1884 in San Francisco, CA) married on 12/23/1841 in Boston, MA. In 1850, the US Census indicated that Nathaniel owned a mill manufacturing woolen yarn in Bridgeport and was quite prosperous. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011, accessed 09/30/2024.) The census noted that the Greenes employed three servants and Nathaniel owned real estate worth $60,000, likely making him one of Bridgeport's wealthiest men. In 1870, Maxwell had three siblings: Bessie E. Bugbee (born c. 03/1870 in CA-d. 03/09/1936 in Salem, OR) , Winslow Bugbee (born c. 1872 in San Francisco, CA-d. 12/13 or 14/1896 in Boston, MA) and Arthur Stephenson Bugbee (born 03/28/1879 in San Francisco, CA-d. 01/23/1958 in CA).
Bessie would marry Louis H. Tarpley (born c. 10/1867 in OR), a lawyer with whom she had three children, two of whom survived to adulthood. She resided in Portland, OR, in 1910. Winslow became a musician in San Francisco, who died at age 24. Arthur also worked as an architect, although he did not associate with Maxwell in practice.
