John Cyprian Stevens was born in Moline, KS, a town in Elk County, in the southeast part of the state. His parents were Charles Freeman Stevens and Esther Meek Kilgore. The Stevens family likely lived in Moline until about 1879, when his father, a preacher, moved them to Knoxville, IA. The 1880 US Census recorded his parents and younger brother living here at that time.
Between 09/12/1918 and 1929, at least, Stevens and his wife lived at 108 Royal Court in Portland. At age 94, Stevens died of a stroke at the Rose Villa Senior Living Community in Milwaukie, OR. At the time of his death, he also had diabetes mellitus. His mother was Esther Meek Kilgore (born 03/03/1845 in Tuscarawas, OH-d. 09/11/1934 in Portland, OR). She wed his father Charles F. Stevens (born 04/11/1841 in Paris, ME-d. 12/16/1936 in Portland, OR) on 09/28/1874 in Battle Creek, MI. (Some sources indicated that Charles's middle name was "Freeland," others said "Freeman.)
John Cyprian Stevens had a sister, Mamie L. Stevens King (born 08/06/1893 in East Des Moines, IA-d. 12/07/1970 in Port Angeles, WA) and a brother William S. Stevens (born c. 1878 in KS), who likely died in childhood.
