Born in Willamette, OR, Marvin Runyan graduated from Molalla Union High School and obtained his B.S. degree at Oregon State College in Corvallis. According to his obituary, "During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as an officer with the 110th Combat Engineer Battalion in the Aleutians and South Pacific-- Adak, Kiska, Oahu, Eniwetok, Leyte and Okinawa. His civil engineering career began in 1940 on a survey crew working for [engineers] Stevens & Koon on the Umatilla Ordnance Project near Hermiston." In his capacity as an executive of the firm, he traveled frequently to widely dispersed job sites and to professional engagement around the US.
Marvin Runyan was married to his wife, Julia (d. 2000) for 58 years.
Marvin and Julia had two children, a daughter, Nancy, and a son, Steven.
