Founder/President, Cornerstone Columbia Development Company, Seattle, WA, 1979-1987. This development firm was responsible for building the Waterfront Place mixed-use development, Alexis Hotel, and the Watermark Tower Condominium complex in Downtown Seattle.

Schell was Seattle's 50th Mayor, and was unfortunate to have been in office during 1999's World Trade Organization (WTO) Riots and other incidents of central city violence. These WTO events occurred between 11/30/1999 and 12/03/1999.

Member/President, Allied Arts of Seattle, 1971- . Schell formed part of the coalition that helped to save Pike Place Market from demolition, and was instrumental in passing Seattle's "One Per Cent for Art" campaign in 1973, a pioneering fund-raising method for erecting public art in cities.
