Born in Chicago, IL, Robinson attended college in Charlottesville, VA, and Cambridge, MA. Following his education at MIT, he returned to live and work in Chicago, IL, obtaining employment as an architectural designer with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Architects, for four years just before World War II. After a four-year architectural partnership in Chicago, he rejoined SOM and filled a vacancy in its San Francisco office. He lived in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1950 until his death at age 83. In 1955, he had an address of 1915 Green Street in San Francisco, CA.

His mother's maiden name was Dodson.
