Principal, M.F. Butler, Architect, San Francisco, CA, c. 1861. In 1861, Butler maintained an office at 802 Montgomery Street. (SeeSan Francisco City Directory, 1861, p. 371.)

The San Francisco Directory, 1862, gave two different addresses for Butler's office. On p. 90, it stated that he occupied Rooms #33-34 in the Metropolitan Block. On p. 433, however, it listed that he maintained Office #23 in the Montgomery Block, on the east side of Montgomery Street, between Washington and Merchant Streets. (See San Francisco City Directory, 1862, p. 433.)

His office in 1863-1864 was at 542 Sacramento Street. (See San Francisco Directory, 1863, p. 87, and San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1864, p. 91.) The directory of the following year recorded that he occupied Room #73 of the Montgomery Block. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1865, p. 104.) He remained here through 1867. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1867, p. 115.)

He resided at 30 Tehama Street in San Francisco, CA, in 1861. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory,1861, p. 88.) He changed lodging to 731 Folsom Street in 1862. (See San Francisco Directory, 1862, p. 90.) Between 1863 and 1865, Butler lived on the north side of 13th Street between Howard and Folsom Streets. (See San Francisco Directory, 1863, p. 87, San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1864, p. 91, and San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1865, p. 104.)
