Part of his legacy is the Center for Regenerative Cal Poly Pomona - John Tillman Lyle 2-2-2-2 Studies, a 16-acre demonstration community showcasing technologies that could help regenerate the life-support systems of American cities and suburbs." The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) gave Lyle's design for his own garden in Sierra Madre, CA, an Honor Award, 1986. The same year, ASLA also presented Lyle with a Merit Award in the Communications Category for his book, Design for Human Ecosystems, (New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1985).

Personal

His parents were Leo Tillman Lyle and Martha Ellen (Rawlins) Lyle.

John Lyle married Harriett L. (Fancher) Lyle.

With Harriet, John Lyle had two children: Cybele K. Lyle and Alexander Lyle.

Oberlin College named a plaza for him in front of the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies. Lyle served as the buildings lead landscape architect. Lyle spoke at a Workshop discussing the social impact of the Friends of Mammoth California State Supreme Court decision, 12/15/1972 held at Cal Poly Pomona's School of Environmental Design; other panelists included: Randy Harrison, Executive Director of the League of California Cities; Gloria S. McGregor, Executive Secretary of the Tulare County Association of Governments; Sharon Hightower, Director of Planning and Development for the City of Claremont, CA; Richard C.
