George H. Shanley, Sr., was born in Burlington, VT, (according to his MT death certificate), the third son of Barney Shanley and Mary. In 1880, the Shanleys continued to live in Jericho, and had three boarders in the house, James Breene (born c. 1846). Patrick Breene (born c. 1858 in VT) and John Breene (born c. 1858 in VT), all of whom were carpenters, who may have worked with Barney. The Shanleys had moved to Fargo, ND, no later than 1887 (more likely by c. 1885), where Barney developed a construction business. In 1900, he dwellied in a residence at 602 1/2 3rd Street North in Fargo with his parents and siblings Mary, Alec, Gregory and Nellie. His father, Bernard F. "Barney" Shanley (born c. 05/1857 in VT) worked in 1880 as a carpenter in Jericho, VT. He became a building contractor in Fargo, ND, twenty years later.

Mary Ann Flynn (born 06/21/1846 in Worcester, MA-d. 01/10/1903 in Kalispell, MT), George's mother, was ten years older than her husband, and had had eight children by 1900, six of whom remained alive in that year. She moved to VT in about 1852 with her family, and met and married Barney Shanley there. His surviving siblings included Martin Thomas Shanley (born 1872 in MA-d. 1873 in Worceter, MA), Frederick Shanley, Mary Shanley (born c. 09/1875 in MA), and Albert "Aleck" Shanley (born 09/19/1879 in VT-d. 11/19/1945 in Great Falls, MT), Gregory Shanley (born 09/07/1881 in Jericho, VT-d. 12/04/1944 in Burlington, VT) and Nellie Shanley (born c. 09/1887 in ND).
