Professional History

Résumé

Partner, Bulger and [Issac Hamilton] Rapp, Trinidad, CO, 1889-1892; Principal, C.W. Bulger, Architect, Galveston, TX, and Dallas, TX, c. 1892-1903; Partner, C.W. Bulger and Son, Architects, Dallas, TX, 1903-1922. It is unclear if the catastrophic Galveston Flood of 09/08/1900, America's deadliest natural disaster, influenced Bulger to relocate inland. Charles William Bulger (1851-1922) worked with his son, Clarence C. Bulger (1881-1956), in a practice that produced a diverse body of work, including approximately 100 churches in TX and others in at least 20 other states. Bulger served as a Deacon for the Baptist Churches of America, and he designed many churches and other buildings (including a sanitarium) for the group. He also worked for other Christian groups.

Professional Activities

Bulger was inducted as a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) at the Second Annual Meeting of the AIA, Southern Chapter, held in Birmingham, AL, on 01/10/1893. Two other Galveston architects--N.J. Clayton and P.S. Rabitt--were also admitted as members at the same time. (See "Annual Report of the Southern Chapter, A.I.A.," in Proceedings of the Twenty-Seventh Annual Convention of the American Institute of Architects, Alfred Stone, ed., Volumes 27-28, [Chicago: Inland Architect Press, 1893], p. 80-81.)
