Lee was born in Portland, OR, and raised there. He moved to Bellevue, WA, to work for Mulvanny Architects in 1975.
He married his first wife Patricia Lee c. 1983; she died of bone cancer in 1997; subsequently, he married Charlene Lee.
In 2005, Lee served on the Board of Homestead Capital, and several non-profit organizations including Communities in Schools of Seattle, Advisory Council member, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation — Puget Sound Affiliate and the Washington Education Foundation.
