Résumé

His father was a building contractor, who worked as a mason cutting granite and other building stone. He also owned stone quarries near their hometown of Norrköping, Sweden. Lindgren migrated to the US during 1882 and settled first in Chicago, IL, where he first did odd jobs for two years, and then became a brick-layer, a profession he pursued for another 3 and 1/2 years.

A biographical compendium of prominent San Joaquin Valley residents published in 1905 stated of Lindgren's business interests: "In January. 1888, he came to Los Angeles, where he soon after engaged in the general contracting and building business. From that city he removed to Bakersfield, where as before stated, he has erected practically the entire business section of the city. While there he also assisted in the organization of the Bakersfield Sandstone Brick Co., of which he is now the vice-president. Under his direction a fine plant was constructed and the business gradually increased until today it is the most extensive brick manufacturing concern in the county. From the start, Mr. Lindgren has made a success of his various ventures, and since 1900 has been contracting in all sections of the state, building some of the most important structures in the various cities. He is also interested in other ventures, including the Lindgren-Hicks Company of San Francisco ; the Golden Gate Sandstone Brick Company and the Holland Sandstone Brick Company, located at Antioch. In 1903 Mr. Lindgren came to Fresno, where he has erected for himself one of the best residences in the city." Born in Sweden, Charles J. Lindgren moved to the US c. mi-1882. He remained in Chicago, IL, first, where he learned stone-cutting and other aspects of the construction trade.

Parents

His father, J.F. Lindgren, was a building contractor in Norrköping, Sweden; his mother, Johanna M. Johnson, had ten children, four boys and six girls, all of whom survived to adulthood. Eight of the ten children immigrated to the US, leaving only two daughters in Sweden.

He married Christina Bergquist.

He and Christina had three children: Gertrude A., Edna M., and Charles J., Jr.
