Miltary Service, World War I, France, c. 1917-1919. The Architect and Engineer noted his service in World War I: "Mr. A.W. Burgren, formerly of Ross & Burgren, architects of San Francisco, is home again after serving for more than a year with the engineers corps in France. Mr. Burgren will resume his architectural practice, but for the present will have his office at his home, 30 Woodland Street, San Francisco." (See "Personal," Architect and Engineer, vol. Principal, Albert W. Burgren, Architect, San Francisco, CA, c. 1920. Burgren opened an architectural office in Room #661 of the Phelan Building in late 1919 or early 1920. The Architect and Engineer chronicled this moment: "Mr. A.W. Burgren has opened offices at 661 Phelan building, San Francisco. Mr. Burgren has recently let a contract for a $28,000 reinforced concrete auto sales building to be built at 12th and Mission streets, San Francisco for the McKee Company. He has also prepared plans for altering three flats into twelve apartments at Clay and Larkin streets, San Francisco." (See "Opens New Offices," Architect and Engineer, vol. He leased Room #711 in the building at 110 Sutter Street in 1931. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1931, p.1800.)
