Personal

Relocation

Born in East Thompson, CT, John Tourtellotte was raised in an established family of French Huguenot descent. He served an apprenticeship between c. 1886 and 1888 with Cutting and Bishop, architects working in Webster, MA. With this experience he drifted West over the next two years, working sporadically on construction sites in Chicago, IL, Kansas City, MO, Albuquerque, NM, and Pueblo, CO, gaining design and engineering experience with each new job. He settled in Boise, ID, by 1890, and founded his own architectural design and construction company. He confined his practice to design in the early-to-mid-1890s, developing a wide client base in a city growing due to mining prosperity. While maintaining the Boise office, Tourtellotte opened a new branch in Portland, OR, in 1913, and remained here for the last 26 years of his life. He died in Portland, in 1939, but was buried in the Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise.
