Mackenzie loosely affiliated with British golf course designer, Harry Colt, in 1905-1906 and with Colt and Charles Alison from 1906-1923. Colt, Alison and MacKenzie laid out courses on the British Isles from 1906-1915, when it expanded to produce designs for golf courses on the European continent, too. While the affiliation was loose from 1905-1919, in 1920, it was more formally incorporated. By 1923, MacKenzie left the partnership to be replaced by John Morrison. (This firm became Colt, Alison and Morrison.) By 1928, MacKenzie had ventured to the US and made connections with Samuel F.B Morse, President of the Del Monte Properties Company, which commissioned him to design the legendary Cypress Point Golf Course (1928). Principal, Alister MacKenzie, Physician/Golf Course Designer, Santa Cruz, CA, c. 1930.
MacKenzie was born in Normanton, Yorkshire, England. Mackenzie liked the Pasatiempo Golf Course that he designed in 1929 that he relocated to the residential development surrounding it, created by his friend, Marion Hollins (1892-1944). He died at Santa Cruz, CA, where he had settled in the early 1930s.
