In his last years, he focused on producing pen-and-ink drawings of watercolors of Pacific Northwest scenes and sites in Europe. He sold these in nearby art galleries.

Personal

Unruh was born and raised in Salem, OR, and relocated to Cambridge, MA, for training at MIT. He then moved to Philadelphia, PA, to obtain a Master's in Architecture at Penn. He returned to Eugene, OR, and went in a partnership with Thomas Moreland in 1967. He worked with Moreland for 21 years, but moved to Los Angeles, CA, in 1988. Unruh came back to OR in 1990 following his diagnosis of liver cancer. He passed away of that disease in mid-1991.

He married Jodi Unruh.

He and Jodi had three children, two daughters and a son: Julie and Jodi, and Mark. (See "Service Tuesday for Local Architect," Eugene Register Guard, 07/29/91, page 16.)
