His parents resided on12th Street by 1880, probably at #200. The 1880 US Census indicated the household consisted of David's parents and siblings, Grace, Annie, Mabel and Warren Franklin Williams. In addition, David's uncle, Franklin, who worked as a draftsman in Warren Heywood Williams's office, lived with the family, as did a servant Ro Sam (born c. 1841 in China). David lived at this address until at least 1888.

His father was the Portland, OR, architect Warren Heywood Williams (1844-1888). His mother was Christina F. Williams (born c. 1848 in Scotland), who managed the household. His siblings included Grace Williams (born c. 1869 in CA), Annie Williams (born c. 1871 in CA), Mabel Williams (born c. 1873 in CA) and Warren Franklin Williams (born 1876 in Portland, OR-d. 1952).
