Personal

Born in TX, Drake came to CA in the 1930s. Drake died prematurely during a skiing holiday in the Sierra Nevada.

Drake discussed the importance of collaboration between architect and building contractor to an interviewer for Progressive Architecture in 07/1947: "...Gordon Drake came to the conclusion that to have work constructed as it has been designed, the architect and craftsman must work in complete accord. With the end of the war he returned to Los Angeles and formed a group of veterans who felt responsible for more than the labor they were performing. But, says the young designer, 'The sad truth is that it takes much more than willingness to construct our drawings,' and accordingly, the group was disbanded last November and replace by two experienced contracting firms." (See "This Month," Progressive Architecture, XXVIII:7, July 1947, p. 14.)
