Professional History

Kaskey gained international fame for his enormous hammered metal sculpture of "Portlandia" fastened above the main entrance of the Portland Public Services Building (1980-1982) by Michael Graves. The sculptural figure of a river goddess, Portlandia (complete with trident) was based on a figure prominent in the Seal of the City of Portland. Kaskey, working with Michael LaSalle and Greg Pettingill, fabricated the large copper repoussé sculpture in Maryland and shipped it in pieces to Oregon where the pieces were joined and floated by barge to the final site. Kaskey and others hoisted the sculpture into place on 10/06/1985 in a grand ceremony. In 2010, Portlandia, at nearly 35 feet high, was the second largest copper repoussé sculpture in the U.S. behind New York City's Statue of Liberty.
