Rolph H. Miller was born in MO on 03/23/1860. Records have not been found that indicate exactly what MO city in which he was born. His sister, Georgia, two years younger, had been born in Saint Louis.

By 1868, at least, his parents had settled in Boles, Franklin County, MO, an agricultural area for which Samuel Miller, Rolph's father, was the community physician. Boles, an unincorporated community, was located about 50 miles due west of Saint Louis above the Missouri River floodplain, and It developed beginning around the time of the Civil War. The Miller's Immediate neighbors were largely foreign-born at the time, with some having emigrated from Denmark, Holland and various German states. In 1870, Samuel possessed $1,000 worth of real estate and had a personal estate of another $1,000. The household consisted of his parents, Rolph and two siblings, Georgia and Herbert.

In 1880, at age 20, Rolph lived with his mother and two sisters in a family residence in Boles, MO. Neither his father nor his brother Herbert were listed on the 1880 Census form. Rolph, the first born, was eighteen years older than his youngest sister Hope. In 1893, "Ralph" Miller was listed as living on the northeast corner of Park Avenue and Clifton Street in Portland. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Portland, Oregon City Directory, 1893, p. 648.)

By 1894, Miller had moved to a residence at 531 Montgomery Street in Portland, OR, and remained here in 1897 and 1898. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Portland, Oregon City Directory, 1894, p. 554, R.L. On 03/11/1901, Rolph H. Miller died at the age of 40 at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Portland. He died from complications due to appendicitis and jaundice. an illness that lasted about nine days. His father was Samuel Miller (born 1822 in ON, Canada- d. 02/14/1904 in Saint Louis, MO), his mother Julia Bender (born 06/15/1835 in OH-d. 03/11/1916 in Lebanon, IL). Julia's parents were Hastings Bender (born in CT) and Sophia Miller (born in Willison, VT). She wed Samuel Miller on 04/25/1859 in Wentworth, ON, Canada. Only Julia remained alive in 1910 and she continued to reside with the Walraths.
