Morrison-Knudsen Company, Incorporated
Co-founder, Morrison-Knudsen Construction Company, Grand View, ID, 1912- ; Knudsen, a Danish immigrant, led the company as president until 1934, when he retired to a house in San Diego, CA. Morrison and Knudsen began their partnership doing difficult, labor-intensive infrastructure projects, such as dams, logging roads, railway lines and irrigation canals. During the Depression and World War II, they became major government contractors, forming part of the teams building Boulder Dam, Hoover Dam, and US military airfields on Wake and Midway Islands. After the war, the company continued to get large government contracts to build the Saint Lawrence Seaway, and San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Project. Following Knudsen's retirement, Harry W. Morrison (1886-1971) ran the company as president from 1934-1960, and remained chairman of the board until 1968.
Knudsen died at this retirement residence in San Diego, CA.
