Professional History

Résumé

Principal, John P. Gaynor, Architect, New York, NY. Gaynor had an architectural office located at 182 Broadway in New York, NY, c.1862.

Principal, John P. Gaynor, Architect, San Francisco, CA, fl 1863-1883. Gaynor had relocated to San Francisco, CA, by 1863. (Thank you to art historian Ellen Halteman who provided me useful information on Gaynor. She noted that "Gaynor was in San Francisco by 1863: SF Bulletin, December 21, 1863: Classified ad offering architectural plans and specifications for all kinds of buildings." See email from Ellen Halteman to the author, 11/18/2021.) Gaynor's San Francisco office was located at 426 Montgomery in 1869 and 315 California Street in 1877. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1869, p. 676, and San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1877, p. 465.) In 1883, Gaynor had an office at 309 California Street in San Francisco. (See the San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1883, p. 1106.)

Personal

Relocation

Gaynor passed away in San Francisco on 06/09/1888. (Again, thank you to Ms. Halteman for this information. See email from Ellen Halteman to the author, 11/18/2021.)

Gaynor was best known for his neo-Venetian design of the advanced, cast-iron Eder V. Haughwout Company Store, New York, NY, 1857; the metal fabricator, Daniel Badger, also became known throughout the U.S. for his cast-iron building components, in part because of the Haughwout commission.
