His parents were Joseph Randolph Coolidge, Sr., (born 12/29/1828) and his wife, Julia Gardner. His parents married 12/18/1880. John Randolph Coolidge was trained as a civil engineer at Harvard's Lawrence Scientific School, and became a lawyer, earning a degree from the Harvard Law School in 1854.
Julia was the daughter of a merchant who did extensive trading with the East Indies, John Lowell Gardner.

He wed Mary Hamilton Hill (1862-1952) in Boston, MA.
Children
One son was Joseph Randolph Coolidge III (born 12/13/1887 in Boston, MA), who became a consulting forester. J.R. Coolidge III also had a son, J.R. Coolidge IV (born 02/04/1916).
