The family of Thomas F. Hargis, Jr., had deep roots in and around Jackson, KY. His great-grandfather was the Breathitt County businessman, politician and County Judge John Seldon Hargis, (1820-1892), and his grandfather was Alexander Hamilton Hargis, (1859-1943), who also served in the KY State Senate, and became a prominent local banker and real estate owner. A great uncle was the notorious Judge James "Big Jim" Henderson Hargis (1862-1908), a partner, with Alexander Hamilton Hargis, in a successful local mercantile business begun by their father. At three years of age, Thomas F. Hargis, Jr., resided on a farm in Naches Heights, Yakima, County, WA, in 1920. At this time, the Hargis Family included Thomas F. Hargis, Sr., his wife, Pauline, their two children, John S. Hargis and Thomas, Jr., and a servant, 60-year-old Martha Ratner, (born c. 1860 in KY).

In 1900, Pauline lived in Forney's Creek, NC, where her father, John C. Eversole, (born c. 01/1865 in KY). was a lumberman. Her mother was Allis Hogg Eversole (born c. 01/1871 in KY), and she married John c. 1888.
Thomas, Sr., had a number of jobs and lived in various places during his life, including time spent in Long Beach, CA, working as a carpenter for a construction company owned by his uncle, Charles Hargis, (born c. 1856 in KY), according to the 1910 US Census. Thomas, Sr., died 30 years before Pauline in 1952, passing away in Lexington, while she remained in WA State.
