Born in Fall City, OR, Boles's family relocated to Portland, OR, in 1928; he attended high school and part of college in Portland; he also attended the University of Oregon in Eugene until 1937, spending his summers in Portland to work in the Office of Arthur Glenn Stanton, a well-known Portland architect; following his graduation, Boles won a fellowship from the University of Oregon to do a "grand tour." He returned to Stanton's office from 1937-1940, before moving to Seattle, WA, for three years, 1940-1943; in 1943, he was drafted and entered the Navy as an officer. Following the war, he came back to Portland, re-connected with Stanton and worked in his firm (or its successor) in Portland until his death in 1992.
He married Marianna Boles;
Rollin and Marianna Boles had two children: a daughter and son.
Boles passed away at age 78 of congestive heart failure;
