The details of Nostrand's (or Nostrant) life are not clear; the 1910 U.S. Census indicated that he was born c. 1883 in NJ and that he lived with the Charles and Grace Cash Family in Portland, OR as a boarder. Earl Cash, then 17, was in the house at this time, and he also worked as a draftsman in that year. Cash went on to become an established Portland architect between 1918-1954.
