Mench, Earl F., Building Contractor

Professional History

Mench's Draft Registration Card dated 06/05/1917 stated that his profession was "real estate and builder" [sic].

Personal

Born in OH, Mench lived in Akron, OH, in 1920 at a rented place, 834 North Howard Street, #3, in a neighborhood filled with rubber workers laboring at the city's many tire plants; he worked as a building contractor there; he came to Seattle, WA, after 1922, as his wife's family had some roots here. In 1930, he and his family lived in rental quarters at 243 East 43rd Street, Seattle, WA; this residence cost $25.00 per month. At this time, he lived next door to a real estate salesman, Roy E. Miester. Mench would become a prominent building contractor in the Ballard Neighborhood of Seattle, WA, in the 1940s. (His houses were especially dense in the Loyal Heights section of Ballard.)

He married Lillian O. Mench (born in Seattle, WA, in 1895) c. 1918. Lillian's parents were from Denmark. Earl and Lillian took a cruise to Bermuda in 1921, perhaps as a belated honeymoon. They traveled from Hamilton, Bermuda to New York, NY, between 03/15/1921-03/17/1921 aboard the S.S. Fort Victoria. After Earl Mench's death in 1948, Lillian lived in Long Beach, CA, where she resided until at least 1954. (See"California Voter Registrations, 1900-1968.") She may have remarried after 1954.

Earl and Lillian O. Mench had two daughters: Minnie I. (born c. 1922 in OH) and Harriet E. (born c. 1922 in OH).

In 1917, he was described as a tall, slender man with light hair and gray eyes. Mench's name also appears in records from Ellis Island; he arrived there in 1921 at age 28 from a trip abroad, perhaps the vacation taken with his wife to Bermuda the same year. (SeeAccessed 10/09/2009)
