Born in Enterprise, MS, Dozier and his family (minus Richard H. Dozier, Jr.) fled Mississippi during the Civil War, 1864, transplanting themselves to Saint Louis, MO. He lived in Saint Louis until 1877, when he relocated to Denver, CO;

His father, Richard H. Dozier, Jr., was a physician (like his father) descended from Huguenot stock that immigrated to South Carolina before 1815. His mother, Ann B. Dozier, was about 11 years younger than her husband. Henry Dozier was one of nine children; his siblings included: Celestin L., (born c.1843), John L., (born c. 1845), William D., (born c.1847), Cynthia P., born c. 1849 and died before 1860), R.W., (born c. 1850), C.L., (born c. 1852), Benjamin, (born c. 1856), and Caroline, (born c. 1859).
