McCarthy assisted in the design of Spokane's Monroe Street Bridge and later worked on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge #1, which had a spectacular collapse in 1940. McCarthy traveled widely, gaining an international reputation as a bridge engineer. He took trips to Europe in 1912, 1921, 1922 and 1926. In 1929, he traveled to Cuba.
