Architect, Julia Morgan, Architect, San Francisco, CA, c. 1920. Joy worked a long time for Julia Morgan in her San Francisco office, and was part of her close-knit atelier, along with Walter Steilberg (1886-1974), and others.
A World War II draft registration card from 1942 indicated that Thaddeus Joy had retired.
Relocation
Born in Minneapolis, MN, Joy lived with his wife and daughter at 160 Quito Road in Saratoga, CA, in 1910. He worked as a draftsman with an architect there.
In 1912-14, he and his wife lived at 1265B Lombard Street in San Francisco, CA. At this time, a "Miss Alice Joy" also lived with him and worked as a draughtsperson, perhaps also for architect Julia Morgan.
In 1920, Joy and his family resided in a rented house at 2816 Derby Street, Berkeley, CA. In 1924, he and Anna lived at 2420 Fulton Street in Berkeley;
At age 59, Joy passed away at his 2816 Derby Street residence following a long illness.
Parents
Joy's father, Thaddeus M. Joy (born 06/1846 in MI), served as a sergeant in the Union Army's 27 Independent Battery, NY Light Artillery in the Civil War. In 1900, he worked as a barber.
His mother was Hellen M. Joy (born 07/1844 in NY). In 1900, they lived in Comstock, MI. (The 1880 US Census differed from the 1900 as to information on his mother; this indicated that his mother's name was Amelia H. Joy, [born c. 1847 in MI].)
In 1880, Eunice P. Joy (b. 1816), Thaddeus M. Joy's mother, lived with her son and daughter-in-law at 164 Highland Avenue, Minneapolis, MN.
Spouse
He married his wife, Anna Ross Joy, (born c. 1884 in CA) c. 1906. Her father came from IL, her mother, OH.
Thaddeus and Anna Joy had 5 children, 4 daughters and a son: Eleanor G. (born c. 1909 in CA), Julia Beatrice (born c. 1911 in CA), Katherine A. (born c. 1916 in CA), Philip R. (born c. 1916 in CA), and Paula (born c. 1922 in CA). In 1920, Eleanor had a job typing and filing in a company.
Biographical Notes
In 1942, Thaddeus was a registered Democrat, his wife a Republican; in 1910, when living in Saratoga, CA, Thaddeus was a registered Republican. Thaddeus's registered political affiliation switched a number of times between 1910-1934, but remained as a Democrat after 1934.
Joy returned left Honolulu, HI, 08/05/1925 aboard the S.S. Maui to San Francisco, CA. He also returned from Honolulu 2/16/1927 on board the S.S. Maui bound for San Francisco.
