Pusterla sculpted the sgraffito (low-relief) work on the sides of the Astoria Column for Ralph Budd, President of the Saint Paul-based Great Northern Railroad, who commissioned the monument. The sgrafitto decoration depicted events in the settlement of the Pacific Northwest.
