Born in Covina, CA, the Pleas family moved to Olympia, WA, where Riley spent his childhood. He spent time in Ann Arbor, MI, at the University of Michigan, and then moved to Seattle, WA. He worked in Seattle, WA, for most of his life. After retirement, Pleas spent part of the year in HI.

His parents were Ray and Helena McClellan Pleas. Riley had a brother, Patrick.

He married a nursing student at the University of Michigan, Nancy Seay, 09/14/1946;

He and Nancy had four sons and three daughters: Terry James, Colleen Raymond, Kelly, Maureen Brotherton, Ryan, K.C. and Molly McCullough.
