Kenney was fortunate to work with the firm of Carol R. Johnson Associates in Boston. This early, woman-owned studio had a broad practice, but worked frequently on university landscape projects. This experience working within the unique social contexts of academic institutions provided her excellent preparation for his future career as the Landscape Architect at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Kenney had four siblings: Kevin McReavy (who died prior to 2011), Karen McReavy Graham, Kimberly McReavy Merlock, and William McReavy.
