As a boy, Ertz lived in Portland, OR; Richard Ellison Ritz wrote of Ertz's childhood: "He came to Portland as a youth, about 1903. He was educated in public schools, and at the Oregon Institute of Technology...." (See Richard Ellison Ritz, Architects of Oregon, [Lair Hill Publishing, 2002] p. 124.) In the American Architects Directory (1955), it notes: "HS, Eugene, Oreg; Private Sch, 1 year; Oregon Inst. of Tech, 2 years." (See American Architects Directory, George S. Koyl, ed.,[Chicago, IL: R.R. Bowker Company, 1955], p. 160.)

Member, American Institute of Architects; Ertz obtained Oregon Architect's License #48 (utilizing a grandfather clause) when the state went to licensing architects in 1919. In 1955, Ertz was a Registered Architect in the States of CA, OR and WA.

Personal

Born in Crockett, (also known as Crockettville), Contra Costa County, CA, Ertz relocated to Portland, OR, with his family in 1903. Ertz practiced in Portland as an architect alone and in partnerships from 1911-c. 1950. At that time, he moved to Beverly Hills, CA, where he died on 04/08/1979. Architectural historian Richard Ellison Ritz indicated that Ertz died in 07/1979. (See Richard Ellison Ritz, Architects of Oregon, [Portland, OR: Lair Hill Publishing, 2002], p. 125.) The 4/08/1979 date came from the California Death Index, 1940-1997.

SSN: 543-12-1807; when surveyed in 1955, Ertz indicated that he had traveled in England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Cuba and Hawaii; he traveled in Mexico between 1936-1953 and took a European vacation in 1952.
