Personal

Relocation

Ernest Thornton Mock, Sr., was born in Tacoma, WA, in 1886, just after the city was connected to the Northern Pacific's transcontinental rail line in 1883. The family had moved to Tacoma from Petaluma, CA, where they lived in 1880. Charles and Amy Mock, Ernest's parents operated a farm near Petaluma. Another Mock, Theodore (born c. 1853 in MO) also farmed nearby, according the census. (See Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: Petaluma, Sonoma, California; Roll: 84; Page: 51B; Enumeration District: 122, accessed 02/07/2022.)

His father died in 1898, and his mother earned a living selling a health remedy. At first, in 1900, she dispensed this from an office in the Berlin Building and two years later from her home. In 1900, she made her residence at 618 South Ainsworth Avenue in Tacoma (See R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1900, p. 445.) She and her family lived at 733 South D Street in Tacoma in 1902. (See (See R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1902, p. 470.) It is possible that money was a serious issue for his family, as they had to relocate again to 617 South Tacoma Avenue by 1903. By this time, Ernest was beginning to supplement the household income as an architectural draftsman. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1903, p. 597.) In 1904, as money became more abundant, Amy no longer was selling her remedy and they remained at 617 South Tacoma for several years. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1904, p. 444.) Amy then took in boarders to add to supplement family finances.

In 1910, Ernest lived at 617 South Tacoma Avenue in Tacoma, with his mother, sister Amy and her husband Lawrence C. Sanders (born 08/30/1882 in Pierce County, WA-d. 02/28/1951 in Tacoma, WA). a marine engineer, a widower uncle William Charnock (born 12/12/1922 in Ireland-d. 01/05/1917 in Tacoma, WA) and two boarders, carpenter Arthur Clark (born c. 1886 in WI) and stenographer Emma M. Thahanst (born c. 1894 in OR). (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: Tacoma Ward 2, Pierce, Washington; Roll: T624_1663; Page: 7B; Enumeration District: 0223; FHL microfilm: 1375676, accessed 02/01/2023.)

A decade later, Mock and his wife Grace resided in his mother-in-law, Adelia A. Morrisey's residence at 614 South Yakima Avenue in Tacoma. According to the US Census of that year, they lived here with Adelia and their children Barbara and Thomas. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Tacoma Ward 2, Pierce, Washington; Roll: T625_1936; Page: 3B; Enumeration District: 264, accessed 02/01/2023.)

They lived in their own dwelling at 2804 North 19th Street in Tacoma by 1924, a house designed by Ernest. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1924, p. 496.) According to the 1930 US Census, the house at 2804 North 19th Street had a value of $10,000, about double the local average, and more than most in the immediate vicinity. By 1930, another child, Ernest Mock, Jr., had been added to the household. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Tacoma, Pierce, Washington; Page: 11A; Enumeration District: 0095; FHL microfilm: 2342245, accessed 02/01/2023.)

On 04/27/1942, Mock continued to live at this North 19th Street address. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives At St. Louis; St. Louis, Missouri; Record Group Title: Records of the Selective Service System; Record Group Number: 147; Box or Roll Number: 139, accessed 02/07/2022.) After Grace's death in 1947, Ernest sold the North 19th Street house, according to his granddaughter, Nicole Mock. (See email from Nicole Mock to the author of 01/31/2023.)

Mock died at age 63 on 02/04/1950. He died in the home of his sister, Edith, at 3917 North 31st Street in Tacoma and was interred at the Tacoma Mausoleum. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation United States of America, Bureau of the Census; Washington, D.C.; Seventeenth Census of the United States, 1950; Record Group: Records of the Bureau of the Census, 1790-2007; Record Group Number: 29; Residence Date: 1950; Home in 1950: Tacoma, Pierce, Washington; Roll: 1137; Sheet Number: 75; Enumeration District: 42-12, accessed 02/01/2023.)

Parents

His father was Charles Wesley Mock (born 05/08/1847-d. 05/06/1898 in Pierce County, WA), his mother, Amy C. Charnock(born 03/13/1856 in Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, England-d. 02/25/1943 in Tacoma, WA). They married on 09/07/1878 in Sonoma County, CA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. California, U.S., Select Marriages, 1850-1945 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc, 2014, accessed 02/07/2022.)

Charles Mock died relatively young, and Amy Charnock Mock likely had to work to support her household. In 1900, she co-managed something called "Sospita" that had its offices in 412-413 Berlin Building in Tacoma. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1900, p. 444.) It appears that it was some sort of health remedy or treatment, and that Amy Mock was its local agent. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1902, p. 612.) It appears that she stopped selling the "Sospita Remedy," as it did not appear in R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma City Directory of 1904.

In 1939, 31 years after her husband's death, Amy Mock lived at 2115 North Anderson Street in Tacoma. (See Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1939, p. 565.)

Charles and Amy had four children: Wesley Charnock Mock (born 12/09/1879 in Petaluma, CA-d. 09/15/1931 in Tacoma, WA), Edith Delafield Mock (born 10/08/1884 in Pierce County, WA-d. 05/26/1956 in Tacoma, WA), Ernest and Amy Marie Mock Sanders (born 03/12/1893 in WA-d. 04/1981 in Seattle, WA). (Prior to 02/01/2023, PCAD incorrectly stated that Charles and Amy had two children, Wesley and Ernest. Thank you to Nicole Mock for correcting this error. See email from Nicole Mock to the author of 01/31/2023.)

In 1900, elder brother Wesley Mock worked as a carpenter in Tacoma. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Tacoma, Washington, City Directory, 1918, p. 525.)

The architect had a close relationship with Edith. Ernest listed her as his next-of-kin on his World War II draft registration card. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives At St. Louis; St. Louis, Missouri; Record Group Title: Records of the Selective Service System; Record Group Number: 147; Box or Roll Number: 139, accessed 02/01/2023.) Edith worked as a stenographer in an architect's office in 1940 (that of Mock and Morrison in Tacoma) and Ernest also passed away in her care in 1950. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1940; Census Place: Tacoma, Pierce, Washington; Roll: m-t0627-04388; Page: 11A; Enumeration District: 42-2, accessed 02/01/2023,)

Spouse

He wed Grace Van Vleck Morrisey (born 12/18/1886 in Crookston, MN-d. 05/06/1947 in Tacoma, WA) on 04/15/1917 in Tacoma. He and his wife had the same birthday. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Washington State Archives; Olympia, Washington; Washington, Marriage Records, PS327-2-0-4, accessed 02/01/2023.)

Her mother was Adelia Adeline Benjamin Morrisey (born 12/03/1858 in Beardstown, IL-d. 08/15/1948 in Magnolia Beach, WA) her father Thomas S. Morrisey (born 02/13/1855 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada-d. 02/14/1918 in Tacoma, WA) Thomas was naturalized a US citizen c. 1875, as per the 1900 US Census. In that year, Thomas worked as the superintendent of a Tacoma machine shop. Adelia had had four children, only two of whom survived in that year. Grace had a younger brother, George Morrison (born c. 12/1888 in WA). They lived at 2706 K Street in Tacoma in 1900. (This 1900 US Census mistakenly called Thomas Morrisey, "John Morrisey." This name was included in Ernest T. Mock's spouse record before 02/01/2023. Again, thank you to Nicole Mock for correcting this mistake. See email from Nicole Mock to the author of 01/31/2023.)

Children

He and Grace had three children: Barbara Alice Mock Alfred (born 06/30/1918 in WA-d. 10/18/1998 in Livermore, CA), Thomas Morrisey Mock (born 10/24/1919 in Tacoma, WA-d. 09/20/1982 in Tacoma, WA) and Ernest Thornton Mock, Jr., (born 09/11/1922 in Tacoma, WA-d. 07/21/1995 in Novato, CA)

Ernest Mock, Jr., would study chemical engineering at the University of Washington in 1944. (See Univerity of Washington, Tyee Yearbook, 1944, p. 71.)

Biographical Notes

His World War II draft registration card of 04/27/1942 listed Mock as being Caucasian with a light complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. He stood 5-feet, 8-and-3/4-inches tall, and weighed 155 pounds. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives At St. Louis; St. Louis, Missouri; Record Group Title: Records of the Selective Service System; Record Group Number: 147; Box or Roll Number: 139, accessed 02/07/2022.)
