Patterson was born in IL in. 02/1864, he lived at 680 63rd Place in Chicago, IL, by 1900, where he worked as a building contractor. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: Chicago Ward 34, Cook, Illinois; Roll: 289; Page: 11A; Enumeration District: 1091; FHL microfilm: 1240289. accessed 10/22/2016.)

"William B. Patterson" was a relatively common name c. 1900, but a man by that name appeared in the Portland, Oregon, City Directory of 1901(p. 703) living at 175 17th Avenue North, but it is not clear that this was the architect, as no profession was listed. The firm time his listing indicated "architect" was 1903. At this time, he resided at 147 11th Avenue in Portland. (See Portland, Oregon, City Directory, 1903, p. 639.)

A year later, he moved to a residence at 675 Clackamas Street with his wife, Minnie. (See Portland, Oregon, City Directory, 1904, p. 733.) According to the US Census of 1910, he continued to live at this address with Minnie, but had no children.
