Born on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, Ching attended Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN, and later worked as a Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) volunteer in Cleveland, OH. Ching worked in Milwaukee, WI, before settling in Seattle, WA, in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington, Seattle.
Ching is probably one of the most important writers of architectural manuals of his time, having written nine books, including the ubiquitous Architectural Graphics, in its fourth edition in 2007.
