Personal

Parents

Son of Wilhelm Nyland and Caroline Kvernberg. Wilhelm was a finish carpenter of Norwegian descent. Clifford was the second of three children, the others Clara Nyland Smith and Orv Nyland. Wilhelm Nyland could not find work in the early 1930s, leading in 1933 to the loss of the family home in Seattle neighborhood of Ballard, where many Scandinavians had settled. The Nylands spent the year 1936 in Norway, as the guests of family there.

Spouse

Clifford Nyland married Hazel McAllister in 1947.

Nyland spent all but one year of his working life as a carpenter; the only exception was a year spent as a fisherman in Alaska.
