Draftsman, Bliss and Faville, Architects, San Francisco, CA, c. 1919; Bliss worked for Bliss and Faville until the mid-1920s, when the firm disbanded. The onset of the Depression ruined opportunities for most architects, particularly those associated with the discredited Beaux-Arts architectural methods. He became a stock broker in the 1930s. He later became a manager of a Bliss Family property, the Glenbrook Inn, Glenbrook, NV.

His father was William Seth Bliss (1865-1941), a civil engineer by training, who operated the family businesses, a main interest being the Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company, located in Carson City, NV. (The Bliss Family, descending from Duane Leroy Bliss (1833-1907), owned the Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company, Glenbrook Company, Glenbrook Hotel Company, Glenbrook Improvement Company, Lake Tahoe Railway and Transportation Company, Barr Realty Company, Sierra Realty Company, and Nevada Lumber Company.) An uncle, Walter Danforth Bliss (1872-1956) was a partner in the prestigious San Francisco architectural firm, Bliss and Faville, with whom William M. Bliss started his career. William Seth Bliss married Mabel Williams of Empire, NV, in 1892. Mabel died on 04/28/1894, eleven days after giving birth to William M. (See "A Guide to the Records of William W.
