Professional History

Before becoming an architect, Gier was a carpenter in Columbus, Nebraska. In Chillicothe, MO, he started an altar building practice called E. & H. Gier, Altar Builders. After awhile, the practice began to build churches. Practiced in OR, c. 1912. He worked with his brothers, Henry and Emil Gier.

Personal

In 1876, Engelbert moved to Columbus, NB, from Germany. He then moved to St. Louis, followed by Chillicothe, MO. In 1896, he moved to Rhineland, Texas. In 1906, he moved to Mount Angel, OR. Late in his life, Gier lived with his daughter in Salem, OR, where he passed away. He is buried in Mount Angel.

Rosa and Engelbert had eight children: Florence, Francis, Lamberta, Wilhelmina, Leo, Herman, Mary and Emma.
