Personal

Relocation

There is some disagreement as to where Burrows was born. The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture indicated that he had been born in Montreal, QC, Canada. (See John Chase, Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture, [Santa Cruz, CA: Museum of Art and History, 2007], p. 297.) This birthplace was corroborated by the 1870 US Census, that indicated that Burrows had been born in "Canada E." Santa Clara County voter records from 1868 and 1869, however, indicated that he had been born on the island of Jamaica. According to this 1869 document, he was registered to vote on 04/22/1869, "on proof of nationality and loss of papers." (See See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Registers, 1868; Collection Number: 4-2A; CSL Roll Number: 124; FHL Roll Number: 977287, accessed 12/13/2023 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Registers, 1869; Collection Number: 4-2A; CSL Roll Number: 124; FHL Roll Number: 977287, accessed 12/13/2023.) Most sources have indicated that he was Canadian by birth.

A "William Burrows" was listed as having had an Anglican baptism in Montral in 1835, although it is difficult to know where this was the same person. The 1860 US Census found William Burrows living in Star Prairie, WI. (This census listed his birthplace as Canada.) He resided here with Christopher Burrows (born c. 1827 in Canada), likely an elder brother, and his wife Jane Burrows (born c. 1828 in Canada) and their children, William Burrows (born c. 1852 in Canada), Stanley Burrows (born c. 1855 in WI) and Jane Burrows (born c. 1858 in WI). It is possible that William Henry Burrows left Canada at a similar time as his brother. If so, he may have left c. 1853-1855. The census noted that Christopher worked as a clerk, and owned real estate assets worth approximately $300 and had a personal estate of $75. William Henry, a carpenter, owned about $20 of real estate and personal savings of $75. Another man, George Geldert (born c. 1840 in MA), also shared the household. In 1870, as per the US Census, Burrows lived in Gilroy Township, CA, with his wife Caroline, and their two sons, Charles and Henry. Charles had been born in CA c. 1865 and Henry in NV c. 1868. It is possible, then, that he took his family to NV at some point in 1868 for some reason. At this time, he owned $700 worth of real estate and had a personal estate of $100, not a lot by contemporary standards, but not destitute. Spouse

He married Caroline Logan (born 04/1844 in IL-d. 01/28/1926 in Dayton, WA), who was six years younger than he. They likely married in CA, where her family had moved by about 1867, if not earlier.

As noted on her death certificate, her father was Robert E. Logan (born 01/1812 in VT-d. 10/30/1881 in Cambria, CA), her mother Eliza Blake (born 1819 in TN-d. 12/22/1901 in Cambria, CA). Robert and Eliza wed on 07/19/1837 in Winnebago County, IL, and resided in Caledonia, IL, by 1840. They were reported as living in Rockton, IL, by the 1850 US Census. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives in Washington D.C.; Record Group: Records of the Bureau of the Census; Record Group Number: 29; Series Number: M432; Residence Date: 1850; Home in 1850: Rockton, Winnebago, Illinois; Roll: 134; Page: 407a. accessed 12/13/2023.)

They transplanted themselves to neighboring IA by 1854, where they boughtt acreage in the Winneshiek / Decorah area and resided here until about 1860. By at least 1867, the Logans had relocated to CA. to the San Simeon / Cambria area in San Luis Obispo County. A portion of this area was called "Santa Rosa" in the 1870 Census, causing confusion with the Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Registers, 1866-1898; Collection Number: 4-2A; CSL Roll Number: 121; FHL Roll Number: 977284, accessed 12/13/2023.) The Logans owned a prosperous dairy farm in Cambria and had at least seven children, including Oscar Logan (born c. 1838 in IL), Nancy A, Logan (born c. 1839 in IL), Francis E. Logan Judson (born 1843 in IL-d. 11/19/1890 in WA), Caroline Logan, Harriet Logan Laird (born 03/19/1848 in IA-d. 01/25/1929 in Santa Barbara County, CA), David A. Logan (born c. 1854-d. 10/25/1913 in San Luis Obispo County, CA), and Harry John Logan (born 02/1864 in San Luis Obispo County, CA-d. 05/22/1929 in San Luis Obispo County, CA)

Children

William and Caroline had at least three children, including a son who died at birth on 01/19/1870 in Santa Clara County. Burrows (born 06/1864 in NV-d. 07/24/1915 in Multnomah County, OR) and Harry Burrows (born c. 1867-d. 1950 in Dayton, WA)
