Principal, Newton Gauntt, Architect, Seattle, WA, 1907. Gauntt was listed in the Seattle City Directory, 1907, as an architect, living and working at 614 10th Avenue North in Seattle. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1907, p. 488) Raised in farming communities in IL, it is likely that he had experience working with his father, a carpenter, and farming. He probably was not formally trained as an architect, and he listed his occupation as "carpenter" in the US Census of 1930.

Relocation
Born in IN in 1862, Gauntt resided with his parents in the farming community of Moores Prairie, IL, in 188. His father Jessie was unusual in that his profession was listed as "carpenter" and not, like most of his neighbors, "farmer." Newton lived with his step-mother, Mary, and his father at the time. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: Moores Prairie, Jefferson, Illinois; Roll: 216; Page: 600C; Enumeration District: 052, accessed 08/31/2022.)
At age 38, he lived on a farm in Paris, IL, in 1900. At this time, he resided here with his wife, Mary S. Gauntt, their two children and two farm laborers, George S. Clinton (born 03/1860 in IL) and Sterling Bartlett (born c. 12/1872 in MO). (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: Paris, Edgar, Illinois; Roll: 299; Page: 11A; Enumeration District: 0069; FHL microfilm: 1240299.)
After leaving IN, Gauntt lived a peripatetic life in WA, OR and CA.
In 1907, Newton Gauntt had a residence and architectural office at 614 10th Avenue North in Seattle. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1907, p. 488) On 05/29/1907, he bought a land parcel in Grant County, WA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Bureau of Land Management, General Land Office Records; Washington D.C., USA; Federal Land Patents, State Volumes, accessed 09/07/2022.)
In 1908, Gauntt and his family resided in Yakima, WA, at the "end of Browne Avenue." (See Yakima, Washington, City Directory, 1908, p. 117.) Between 1909 and 1910, they lived at 6 12th Avenue North in Yakima. (See Yakima, Washington, City Directory, 1909, p. 131 and Yakima, Washington, City Directory, 1910, p. 129.) Newton's name was not listed in the Yakima City Directory, 1911, (p. 128), although those of his wife and children were still residing at 6 12th Avenue North. Mary Gauntt's name was still listed in Yakima, at 6 Hall Avenue, although Newton's was not. (See Yakima City Directory, 1913,p. 137.)
He and his wife Sophie lived in Spokane, WA, in 1918, at 171 South Stevens Street, Spokane, WA. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Spokane City Directory, 1918, p. 389.)
State of OR motor vehicle registration records showed that Gauntt lived at 708 Irving Street in Portland, OR, in 10/1922. This record indicated that he drove a Dort sedan at the time. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Oregon State Library; Salem, Oregon; State of Oregon: Automobile, Motorcycle, Dealer and Chauffeur Registrations, Automobile and Motorcycle Transfers, and Convictions for Violation of the Motor Vehicle Laws - October, 1922, accessed 08/31/2022.)
He resided in Los Angeles, CA, in 1924 at 5301 South Figueroa Street, as per Los Angeles County voter records. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1924, accessed 08/31/2022.)
He lived with his daughter, Millie M. Mobouck, (and her husband) in rural Naches, WA, according to the US Census of 1930. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Naches, Yakima, Washington; Roll: 2524; Page: 4B; Enumeration District: 0070; Image: 1107.0; FHL microfilm: 2342258,) Gauntt died at the age of 76, and was buried in the Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima, next to his wife and son.
Parents
Records for his father Jessie Gauntt are confusing, as it appears that there was a contemporary named Jessie Gaunt (born c. 03/1835 in OH) also living at the same time in OH. The other Jessie Gaunt lived past 1900. The names seem to have been spelled differently: with one having only one "T" in his surname. To middy the waters futher, both Jessie Gaunt(t)s seem to have been born in OH.
His father was Jesse D. Gauntt (born 1835 in OH-d. 02/02/1894 likely in IL), who worked in 1880 as a carpenter, while his mother Amelia Guile (born 01/24/1839 in Shelby County, IN-d. 1871 in Shelby County, IN), managed the household. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Geneanet Community Trees Index [database on-line]. Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2022, accessed 08/31/2022.) They wed on 02/09/1860 in Shelby County, IN. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Indiana, U.S., Marriages, 1810-2001 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014, accessed 08/31/2022.) Amelia died at age 32 in 1871.
To complexify indentification, both men named "Jessie Gaunt" (or Gauntt) seem to have married women with the name "Mary." After Amelia's death in 1871, it appears that Jessie D. Gauntt wed Mary A. Gauntt, sometime after 1871, who received his Civil War Veteran's benefits and with whom he and Newton lived in Moore's Prairie, IL, according to the 1880 US Census. The only other explanation is that Jessie D. Gauntt had two families with two different wives.
Spouse
According to IL marriage records, he wed Mary Redmon or Redman (sometimes called "Molly," born 1856-d. 1922 in Notches Heights, WA) on 06/11/1884 in Edgar County, IL. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Jordan Dodd and Liahona Research, comp.. Illinois, Marriages, 1851-1900 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005.) Gauntt separated from Mary before 1911.
A "Newton C. Gaunt," likely the architect, was also recorded as having married Sophia Douglass Long (born c. 04/1869 in AL-d. 1931 in Seattle, WA) on 03/21/1911 in Multnomah County, OR. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Oregon State Library; Salem, Oregon; Reel: 2 Source Information: Oregon, U.S., Marriage Indexes, 1906-2009 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc, 2000, accessed 09/07/2022.) Gauntt was known to live in Portland at the time from motor vehicle records.
Children
With Mary S. Gauntt, he had at least three children, two of whom, Adrin J. Gauntt (born 06/1892 in IL-d. 1921) and Mildred "Millie" M. Gauntt Mobouck (born c. 01/1894 in IL), were alive and accounted for in the US Census of 1900. (See Year: 1900; Census Place: Paris, Edgar, Illinois; Roll: 299; Page: 11A; Enumeration District: 0069; FHL microfilm: 1240299.) Millied later married Emil C. Mobouck (born c. 1890) and Belgian-born fruit farmer.
