Résumé

While he relocated a great deal during the first 35 years or so of his life, Charles Lyman Haynes settled into a successful architectural practice in Seattle, WA, after 1907. His obituary said of his career: "Mr. Haynes, born in Santa Cruz, Calif., came to Seattle in 1907 and was active in construction of homes, apartment buildings and industrial structures here. He aided in the original development of the Mount Baker residential area and was identified with the construction of the Royvue Apartments, Dunlap Apartments and the Brooklyn Building." Partner, Van Siclen and Haynes, Architects, c. 1894. According architectural historians John Chase and Daniel Gregory, Van Siclen worked with Frank Lyman Haynes on the A.L. McCandless House in Salinas, CA, in 1894. (They referred to Haynes as "Frank Layman Haynes." See John Chase and Daniel Gregory, The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture, [Santa Cruz: The Museum of Art and History, 2007], p. 310.) Haynes did live back in Santa Cruz in 1894 and could have collaborated with Van Siclen on this house at this time.

Charles Lyman Haynes was born in Santa Cruz, CA, on 09/23/1869 to Philip Lyman Haynes and Amanda M. Fancher. He moved a great deal during his professional life among cities in CA and WA. Early in life, he spent short amounts of time in Napa, CA, San Jose, CA, and Santa Cruz. He spent about eight years living in Spokane, WA, and another seven in San Francisco, CA, before relocating permanently to Seattle by 1907.

The US Census found Charles living with his mother in Napa. CA. His father had died in 1877, and his widowed, 34-year-old mother no doubt wanted to be closer to family in that city. In 1880, they dwelled on Randolph Street in Napa. Prior to 1892, Haynes resided in San Jose, CA. He moved to Spokane Falls, WA, in 1892, according the San Jose, California, City Directory, 1892, (p. 226).

Voter records showed that Haynes lived back in his hometown of Santa Cruz in 1894. He lived on Mission Street in Santa Cruz at that time. Haynes and his family lived at Room #16 of the Spokane's Crescent Block in 1895. Charles's mother Amanda lived with him in 1895. (See R.L. He moved to San Francisco by either the very late 1890s or by 1900. Haynes lived at 347 Noe Street in San Francisco, CA, in 1900 and remained here into 1902. He relocated to Seattle by 1907. In 1908, he resided at 715 13th Avenue and maintained an office in the Mehlhorn Building. (See R.L. Charles and Alma lived with their daughter Phyllis at 4303 37th Avenue NE in a residence owned by his son-in-law, Roger A. Walker. The house had an estimated value of $9,000, about three of four times that of neighboring residences. At the time, Roger worked as a superintendent for a power and electric company. The architect died of esophageal cancer on 07/15/1947 at the Waldo Sanitarium in Seattle' s Maple Leaf neighborhood. He had remained at this facility for nine weeks before his death. He wed Alma Inslee Worrell (born 01/12/1871 in San Francisco, CA-d. 05/28/1958 in Bellevue, WA). Alma's parents were Calvin Russell Worrell (born c. 1828 in IN-d. 09/27/1906 in San Francisco, CA), who worked as a brick mason in 1880, and Lucia Worrell (born c. 11/1847 in ME). In 1880, Lucia managed their San Francisco household that included four children--Alma, Eveline Worell (born c. 1874 in CA), Frank (born c. 1875 in CA), Adeline (born c. 1877 in CA) and Calvin (born c. 1879 in CA)--and did so while dealing with rheumatism. The family was able to afford a servant, Delia O'Donnell (born c. 1855 in PA). Santa Cruz County voter rolls for 1894 indicated that Charles Lyman Haynes had a fair Caucasian complexion with gray eyes and brown hair. He stood about 5-feet, 6-and-1/2-inches tall.
