Born in Houston, TX, Adele Wharton lived with her family at 2204 Baldwin Street, Houston, TX, from at least 1920-1930. In 1930, the US Census listed an estimated value of $40,000 for the Wharton Residence, a large amount for the time. She and Leland lived for several years in the Richmond Beach neighborhood of Richmond, CA, an area inhabited by many University of California faculty. Vaughan died in Alameda County, CA, at the age of 44.

Her father was Clarence R. Wharton (born 10/05/1873 in Tarrant County, TX), a prosperous lawyer; her mother's name was Adele Spoonts (born Abilene, TX, 03/18/1882). Before Adele (the younger) was born in 1910, the Spoonts Family lived at 803 3rd Street in Fort Worth, TX; at this time, her grandfather, Morris A. Spoonts (born 11/1857 in TX) was a lawyer. Her grandmother, was Josephine Spoonts (born 06/1858 in TX). who raised the family's two sons and two daughters. Clarence and Adele Spoonts Wharton had at least three daughters and one son: Adele W., Josephine (born 08/26/1908 in Houston, TX) Frank (born c. 1911 in Houston, TX) and Ella (born 12/03/1912 in Houston, TX).

Adele Wharton married the landscape architect Hollingsworth Leland "Punk" Vaughan (1905-1974) in 1937.
Biographical Notes
Adele Wharton had the good fortune to travel in her late teens. She sailed with her parents and two sisters from Wilmington, Los Angeles, CA, to Honolulu, TH, between 07/27/1929-08/02/1929 aboard the S.S. City of Honolulu. The family returned to San Francisco, CA, on 08/21/1929. Two years earlier, Adele and Josephine traveled to Plymouth, UK, from New York, NY, between 06/20-27/1927 aboard the Cunard Liner Caronia and returned from Cherbourg, France, to Montreal, QC, aboard the S.S. Montroyal; the two left France 08/31/1927, arriving at Montreal about a week later. The border crossing list for this return voyage incorrectly noted Adele's birthday to have been 03/15/1906.
