Charles Isaac Havens was born in NY State and moved with his family to California by about 1861. (His youngest brother Eddy was born in CA in about 1861.) Between 1869-1876, at least, he resided with his parents and siblings at 17 Tehama Sttreet in what is now the South of Market district of San Francisco. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1869, p. 296.) According to the 1870 US Census, his family owned $5,000 worth of real estate and had savings of $1,000, making them economically middle-class. In addition, to his parents and five siblings, a boarder, William E. Dennison (born c. 1849 in NY), lived in the house at that time. Havens, his wife, and two children resided at 2835 Howard Street in San Francisco, as per the 1900 US Census. Ten years later, Charles and Amelia had a house at 2881 Howard Street. They employed a servant, Kataro Suzumoto (born c. 1884 in Japan), who lived with the family. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: San Francisco Assembly District 32, San Francisco, California; Roll: T624_96; Page: 4A; Enumeration District: 0044; FHL microfilm: 1374109, accessed 02/17/2022.)
