Halton Molvik was born in a small family settlement, Molvika, in Northern Norway, in the Arctic. He attended business school in Hamar, Norway in 1943. They immigrated to the United States in 1948, resettling in the Scandinavian Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, WA.

He was the youngest of 17 children.

Married Helen Molvik in 1945; she died in 1984. His second wife was Trude Molvik, whom he married in 1986.

Molvik had a daughter, Carol Korpi and a son, Dennis Molvik, both of whom lived in Shoreline, WA, in 2007.
