His father was Lathrop Douglass (d. 1981), a noted CT-based architect, who became an important American designer of shopping centers in the 1950s. Douglass opened his own firm in 1947, and received a number of commissions from the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (later renamed Exxon). His mother was Dorothy Duncan Howe (d. 1976). Lathrop and Dorothy also had a daughter, Rebecca Douglass Gimelli, who in 1981, lived in Hayden Lake, ID.
Douglass has married three times. His second wife was Lisa Niehaus. He is currently married to Frances Douglass.
