Stephen J. Day is both an architect and has had legal training, a rare combination. In his own words, "His primary professional focus is on architecture and cultural preservation." Board member / Past President, The Civita Institute, a nonprofit 501.c.3 organization with a historic arts complex in central Italy. "The Civita Institute is a trade name for the Northwest Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in Italy, a Washington nonprofit corporation founded in 1981 by University of Washington Professor Emerita and architect Astra Zarina (1929-2008), with other UW faculty and prominent architects based in Seattle. Stephen Day’s work with The Civita Institute began in 2006 in a collaboration with Astra Zarina, Nancy Josephson and others at The Civita Institute in developing a transition plan and donation of Astra Zarina’s historic properties in Italy (as primary donor, along with her husband Anthony Heywood) involving the building complex that Zarina began to acquire and restore in the 1960’s, located north of Rome in the ancient hill town of Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy. Day and Nancy Josephson were each students and then full time teaching assistants to Astra Zarina in Rome in the UW Architecture in Rome programs in the early 1980’s. Stephen Day was elected president of the Civita Institute Board in 2006 and headed the 6 year-long effort to complete the transfer of properties and further development of this group of seven historic structures, with gardens, archives, and library into a nonprofit educational facility focusing on the mission: “To inspire and foster an interdisciplinary understanding of the unique qualities of Italian hill towns that remain pertinent to our contemporary experience, through the promotion of historic preservation, education and scholarly research, artistic creation, cultural exchange, and professional explorations." Co-founder (with Nancy Josephson), CrossCulture, WA and Italy, 2011. "[Cross Culture is] a Washington nonprofit corporation that develops professional art and architecture educational programs principally for architects, including a recurring field program series led by Day and Josephson in central Italy titled “Historic Preservation and Sustainable Design in the Etruscan Hill Towns of Central Italy.” These international programs are a collaboration with the Civita Institute in Italy and include field learning sessions approved by the American Institute of Architects for the continuing education of licensed architects. Spouse

Stephen Day, Jr., wed Nancy R. Josephson (born 1953) in 1986. Nancy Josephson earned a BA Architecture from the University of Washington in 1985 and Master of Architecture from Columbia University in 1988. She became a teaching assistant to Prof. Astra Zarina in Rome. She has also served as President of the Board of the Civita Institute.

Children

He and Nancy had two daughters, Anna Josephson-Day (born 1989) and Audrey Josephson-Day (born 1996).
