After college in 1871, Marshall toured Europe with his father. Marshall applied for US Passport on 04/03/1902, as well. The 1902 US Passport Application form described him, at age 50, standing 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a high forehead, grey eyes, pointed nose, dark brown hair, medium complexion and an oval face. He sported a beard and moustache.

Courework, Rutgers College Scientific School, New Brunswick, NJ, 1871-1873. Marshall left the Rutgers College Scientific School following his junior year, and never completed his architecture degree. He traveled with his father in Europe for some time after 1873.

The US Census of 1900 indicated that James R. Marshall had a room in a building at 2507 Pennsylvania Avenue; he lived in the building with his brother Collins (born c. 1856 in PA), a physician, their father, two servants and two others. In 1920, Marshall lived with his brother, Collins, in a residence they owned at 2509 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. A 50-year-old servant, Dora Blenkenbaker (born c. 1870 in VA), attended to them.
