Ware to Kansas City, MO, two years after the latter started a branch office there in 1885. According to William A. Coles, "Van Brunt and Howe was then [in 1887] the leading firm west of the Mississippi. and the significance of the firm was acknowledge in Van Brunt's selection as one of the chief architects of the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago."
